The Truth About Carbs – Friend or Foe?

Carbs often get a bad reputation in fitness. Many diets label them as the enemy, promising rapid weight loss if you cut them out. But here’s the truth: carbohydrates are not your enemy — they’re an important source of fuel.

The real question isn’t whether carbs are good or bad. It’s how you use them.

Why Carbs Matter

  • Energy for training – Carbs fuel high-intensity exercise like CrossFit, sprints, and lifting.
  • Recovery – They help replenish glycogen stores, speeding up muscle recovery.
  • Brain function – Glucose (from carbs) is the brain’s primary fuel source.

A 2018 review in Nutrients confirmed that athletes who consume sufficient carbs perform better in both strength and endurance sports (Thomas et al., 2016).

The Problem with Demonising Carbs

Cutting carbs too low can lead to:

  • Fatigue and poor performance in the gym.
  • Irritability and brain fog.
  • Increased risk of binge eating when cravings hit.

It’s not carbs themselves that cause issues — it’s the type and the amount.

Smart Carbs vs Not-So-Smart Carbs

  • Smart choices – Whole grains, fruit, vegetables, oats, rice, potatoes. These provide fibre, vitamins, and steady energy.
  • Not-so-smart choices – Highly processed sweets, pastries, fizzy drinks. These spike blood sugar and leave you crashing.

👉 The goal isn’t “low carb” or “high carb.” It’s right carb, right time.

How to Balance Carbs for Training

  • Before workouts – A moderate serving of easy-to-digest carbs (like a banana or oats) for fuel.
  • After workouts – Pair carbs with protein to boost recovery.
  • Day-to-day – Build balanced meals with protein, carbs, and healthy fats.

The Takeaway

Carbs are not your foe. They’re your ally when used wisely. Choose quality sources, time them around training, and enjoy the benefits in performance, recovery, and health.
